Ethical Policy

Ethical Policy
We are always working to improve our ethical sourcing and reduce our environmental impact both as individuals and as a company, without compromising the quality of products and service that we offer.

The Green movement interweaves environmental goals with a sense of personal and social responsibility. Sustainable practises use resources without depleting them or permanently damaging the environment that yields them. The words green and sustainable are becoming overused and have largely become marketing hype so if these issues are important to you please investigate any claims made by manufacturers thoroughly, as we are sure you are aware, some of their claims have very tenuous links. We feel this undermines the great efforts made by those with a genuine desire to improve on such important issues and therefore also feel it is essential to make transparent our own efforts. We have tried to lay out our policies and practices as honestly and clearly as possible. Please feel free to ask us anything you wish further clarity on.

The world is a complex place and necessary change and evolving can take time and expense. We are eager to embrace both the above issues and are presently in the middle of the transition period, whilst constantly doing our best to improve the impact we as individuals make within the jewellery trade. All our jewellery is designed and made in house, and we are not interested in buying in designs or work, but we do welcome any contact from eco or green suppliers of raw materials who feel they have genuinely environmentally friendly products to offer us.

We aim to incorporate in our environmental practices the best available technology that is economically achievable, minimise the use of all materials and energy and not use any materials derived from endangered species.

We are currently in the process of transferring our silver casting to a supplier that uses recycled silver. Using recycled silver reduces the need for new extracting new material. Many parts of the world have been blighted by mining and quarrying, which destroy the natural environment, wildlife habitats and can cause environmental and health problems for local people. Having said this there is also an argument for supporting the local economies of mining regions where many people rely on these mines for their sole source of income and to this end We have managed to obtain a source of certified fairtrade green gold from Colombia where the miners are paid a premium for the metal and whilst this does incur a higher cost of raw materials and thus slightly higher end product price, we feel this to be justified.

The main problem with any manufacturing is traceability from raw product from the mine through to the final piece – for example making sure casters keep our metal separate from other non eco supplies from other customers. We feel we have now established a clear route for this and are working to transfer this process to all our manufacturing. All our gold and platinum will be coming out of Fair trade / Fair trade Green certified sources.

Whilst we have generally always worked with small family businesses we are tightening up on our checks on sources of gemstones, endeavouring to source fair trade goods. Although our diamonds have always been from guaranteed conflict free sources we have recently found a supplier who can also guarantee them to be fair trade. The greatest impact is often made by everyone adopting relatively simple everyday practises whose shear quantity amount to great change. We do our best to apply the principles of reduction, reuse and recycling to the management of our products and their packaging.

It is a standard jewellery practise to collect the metal filings, dust, emery papers and sweeps produced during the manufacturing process. These, together with any scrap pieces of metal, are refined and thereby reintroduced to the metal supply chain.

We would actively encourage you to let us help you to recycle any old broken or unused silver, gold or platinum items you have. The scrap value of these can be put toward any new jewellery item you may wish to purchase from us. For more info on upcycling please view the Rejuvination Service on this site. Recycling precious metals reduces the need for extracting more from the earth and keeps metals in the marketplace instead of lost in drawers, closets and scrap heaps.

We only use recycled paper in the office and we use the reverse of each sheet of waste paper. Recycling one ton of paper saves the equivalent of 17 trees, 4 barrels of oil, 7,000 gallons of water, keeps 60 pounds of pollutants out of the air and saves enough energy to power an average home for 6 months. The material that makes a piece of paper can be recycled up to 7 times. In fact, the USEPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) has found that making paper from recycled materials results in 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution than making paper from new materials.

We also recycle glass, cans, and all other waste products wherever possible. Brighton has a very proactive and forward thinking company called ‘Magpie’, who collects almost everything from an amazing array of different plastics to foil and cartons and even run their vehicles on 20% biodiesel.

Fully committed to recycling and protecting the environment in every way possible - We do our best to recycle as much as possible in all areas within the business.

We endeavour to use environmentally friendly products generally within the workshop, from hand wash to biodegradable bin liners, through to pickle salts and ultrasonic fluids. We now only buy in biodegradable bubble wrap but also make a point of reusing all bubble and packing filler sent to us whenever practicable We also try to avoid unnecessary energy wastage and by that we don’t mean being lazy but for example things like designing the website to be predominantly black, thus reducing the energy used to view it, and turning off unused electrical equipment.

We also endeavour to use local suppliers to minimise shipping and the carbon footprint.

Our boxes are handmade in Britain from recycled materials

We are members of the British jewellers Association, who strive to ensure high standards within the industry, and also members of the Federation of small businesses who work hard at protecting the rights of small businesses.
